It's safe to say that everyone who has ever used the Internet has seen a banner ad, if not tens of thousands. Banner ads are a type of online advertising comprising an image that has been embedded into a Web page (or email) that is designed to attract traffic to another Web site. Companies can pay to have their banner ads display on Web sites, on blogs, in online communities and social networking sites-- and even in online games and virtual worlds.

Banner ads come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and degrees of interaction. They usually contain some text, a logo, and a call-to-action (text that compels you to click on it.) Some banner ads contain animation, sounds/music, and video to make them more engaging. And some banners, called live banners, are created dynamically (i.e., on-the-fly) when the banner displays to make them more relevant to the individual viewing them. For example, a live banner might contain a photo of a young family on a parenting site but display an older couple when that ad is served on a Web site whose primary audience is over 55 years old.
