Landing pages are specialized Web page designed to be an entry point to a Web site. While it might seem that most people will enter a site through its homepage, there are many reasons that a site may have multiple – or even thousands – of landing pages.

For instance, visitors may come to your Web site by way of banner ads they click on, pay-per-click ads, links from affiliate Web sites, natural search results, or even from links that you send provide to people in emails or via social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

The reason for creating landing pages are twofold: First, you cannot always control which page will be the first that somebody sees at your site. When somebody finds a page deep within your site because it registered high in his or her search results (via Google, etc.), it would be helpful if there was enough information on that page for the visitor to have an idea of who you are and be able to find his or her way to other parts of your site. As a general rule of thumb, when designing a site, it is best to assume that all pages that aren't behind a login may be the first page somebody sees on your site.

Second, even when you can control which page people enter your site on, there are often good reasons to direct them to someplace other than your homepage. For instance, you may wish to direct people to a specific product page, a promotion, a news item, an article, or even a version of an existing page on your site that has been customized to appeal more to a specific visitor, based on profile information or knowledge of where they are coming from.
