Packaging Design

The science, art and technology of enclosing or protecting products for distribution, storage, sale and use.

Packaging design is a specialized art unto itself. It should never be entrusted to designers inexperienced with this very tricky medium, such as those whose work is limited primarily to Web and advertising design.

In addition to standard design skills such as knowing how to grab somebody's attention, appeal visually to a target audience, and communicate the essence of a carefully chosen message instantly, packaging designers must also have expert-level knowledge of:

  • State-of-the-art packaging technologies (and knowing when to use which)
  • Green packaging
  • Legal requirements (such as FDA and child safety rules)
  • Cost-saving design methods
  • Design for manufacturability
  • OOBE (Out-of-Box Experience)
  • Retention and up-sell implications of packaging design
  • Customer service implications of packaging design
  • Die cutting and box making
  • Point-of-purchase display design
  • Retail merchandising implications of design choices
  • Retailer- and industry-specific methods, rules, and best practices

And, though it may go without saying, packaging designers must have expert knowledge of printing design and pre-press technologies, which is virtually a lost art among most of today's Web-centric design shops.

At SpinSix, we know there's much more to good packaging design than making a pretty box. If your product is sold in a retail environment, sometimes the prettiest box is not what sells; it's the box that stands out in a sea of competitors' products. And before it ever gets to that level, it must pass muster with your real customer: your distributors and buyers at major retail chains.
